The title, The Bald Guerrilla Girls, plays on The Bald Prima Donna, a play written in the 1930s by Eugène Ionesco, a French playwright of the Theatre of the Absurd. It refers to China's current, absurd reality, in w
hich women's reality is complex and awkward as they face chaotic new social structures. Instead of "song" we offer "dagger-axe" (the words sound the same in Chinese), to make clear that in the present Chinese context where Feminist Art is still something very unusual and new, artists have to turn to metaphorical arms instead of entertainment. Disguised by absurdity, artists must take historical responsibility and show the way.The exhibition includes three contemporary domestic or overseas female artists of different ages. With their unique art language, they unconventionally challenge the long and established social identity of Chinese women and the concept of gender in China. They reject the common practice in feminist art that usually equates the female body with the "me" subject. They examine the limits of women's experiences of pain and joy in a patriarchal society, and review and interpret women's roles in culture, sociology and psychology. As feminist artists, they express their cultural perplexity in a consumer society and amid globalization, and take advantage of the great social transformation through which they are able to find their independent and equal voices as women.
